Town Board Honors 2 St. Anthony's Championship Teams

State champion football and girls soccer teams recognized at Town Hall.

Two state champion teams were honored from St. Anthony's High School by the Huntington Town Board last week.

Finishing 16-1-4 en route to a state CHSAA Class AA championship, the Lady Friars girls soccer team capped a championship season with a 4-0 win over Buffalo-Nichols. It was the 10th Catholic state title for St. Anthony's and the program's first since 2007.

Girls soccer coach Dave Prutting was named Class AA Coach of the Year by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

"We give them congratulations for a great season," said Town Board member Mark Cuthbertson at Town Hall Dec. 13. "Congratulations coach and to all of the Lady Friars."

Members of the football team and coach Rich Reichert were recognized for winning the program's 13th CHSFL Class AAA championship with a  in the 2011 title game.

"They won their tenth title in 11 years and their 13th since '93," said Cuthbertson. "St. Anthony's is just a great asset to our community and the Long Island community."

The New York State Sportswriters Association declared St. Anthony's state co-champion of its final Class AA football rankings. The Friars share the honor with Orchard Park, which took the NYSPHSAA Class AA title with a 21-13 win over Newburgh on Sunday in the Carrier Dome.
