Huntington businessman seeking first-time election to Town Board.

After a few court battles and months of campaigning for the chance to serve, election day is now just days away for Town Board candidate Eugene Cook.

Cook, a registered Indendence Party member endorsed by the Conservative Party, had in September for the Republican nomination. The decision came after a five-day trial brought on by a Huntington Republican Party member.

In the 5-0 appellate decision, the state Supreme Court reversed an which ordered Cook removed from the Republican ticket.

Now days away from the Nov. 8 election, Cook, who lives in Greenlawn with his wife and children, remains focused on the issues.

Not interested in a full-time political career, the candidate and owner of an asphalt and concrete company has stated at several campaign stops that he wants to serve his community and fix what needs to be fixed.

The town is killing residents with taxes and needs to spend wisely, according to Cook, who says lower the taxes could make make housing more affordable and obtainable for residents.

Regarding the Jack Abrams School which closed last year, Cook said he will work to get it reopened if elected.

"The Town of Huntington should have been down there with code enforcement enforcing the laws that they set to stop the overcrowding," said Cook at a recent forum.

On recent education cuts, Cook says there should be no excuse for Huntington students not to get the best education possible.

"As a Town Council member what I would like to do is get all of the boards of the schools together and sit them down and have a good discussion about what we need to consolidate to cut costs," said Cook recently.
