Sept. 6: Cell Phones For Soldiers; Civil War Roundtable

Five things you need to know today.

1. Cell Phone For Soldiers Drive A Success: Suffolk County Legis. Steve Stern, D-Huntington, recently held a “Cell Phones for Soldiers” drive collecting used cell phones that will be recycled and exchanged for calling cards to be distributed to U.S. troops. The collection took place at three Stop and Shop locations throughout the community, where more than 100 cell phones, chargers, and accessories were collected, according to Stern.

2. Lighthouse Volunteers Needed: The Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society is always looking for qualified volunteers to assist with tours, construction, public relations and its website. 3. School Partnerships: South Huntington schools are forming partnerships to raise funds with Target, Stop and Shop, and Box Top promotions. The programs have no cost or obligation to the residents or district.

4. Civil War Roundtable: Catherine M. Wright, the curator of the Museum of the Confederacy, will discuss her book, "Lee's Last Casualty: The Life and Letters of Sgt. Robert W. Parker,"  at the at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Parker is believed to be the last man killed in action in the Army of Northern Virginia. Admission is free.
