Question of the Day: Do You Support a Tax Cap?

Should Albany legislators put limits on local taxes?

Should New York State cap property tax rates?

In response to complaints about the state's high taxes, the Legislature could vote this week to cap the tax levy, limiting how much rates can increase from year to year.

Do you think Albany should set a cap or should voters in each taxing district decide?

Everyone should attend tonight's board meeting and question the board as they start to set up reserves for employee benefits and had to raise taxes to support this type of spending. Not a dime for the kids either.

It's easier to complain about the people you know locally than those who are really responsible, the Albany politicians who won't do what's needed because they need the campaign contributions from the teacher's union statewide! Excellent examples - the Taylor Law and the Triborough Amendment, also the Wick's Law. If teacher's contracts were forced to be restructured by Albany, we'd see more immediate savings. The new pension Tier V and the upcoming Tier VI will be helpful, but not for many years to come - they only apply to new hires. A tax cap isn't going to help us people! It will only make the misery worse by forcing districts to cut more and more of the programs and more and more of the younger teachers. Albany isn't interested in changing the "last in first out" firing rules for teachers. Albany is only interested in shifting the blame to our schools who have their hands tied in so many ways financially. A cap along with more loss of state aid is going to cripple our schools. As to the school boards - yes, you need to know who you are voting for. But no one asks the right questions at the Meet the Candidate Nights, and to be honest, none of the new candidates will be able to answer a contract question intelligently as they have no information on confidential issues!

It would be helpful if all of you stated which school district you are talking about in these posts!
