Plan for Veterans' Condos Advances
Town Board votes for zoning change to put 14 condos on Columbia Terrace.
Zoning to allow the construction of condos on an empty lot on in Huntington Station won Town Board approval Tuesday.
The one-acre lot, on the corner of Lowndes Avenue and Columbia Street, will hold 14 condos designated for sale to veterans at affordable prices.
The property was previously occupied by three dilapidated houses that were torn down in 2010. The houses were purchased by Suffolk County and the town's affordable housing trust fund for $778,000.
The town obtained a state grant of up to $1.5 million for the project’s completion. The zoning change will allow for the 14 units to be built and maximize the amount the town will receive from the grant.
The town will complete the design and seek a developer to undertake construction.
At one point, the plan was to build eight units, each with an accessory apartment, but the proposal stalled over mortgage requirements involving the apartments.
Renaissance Downtowns, master developer for the Huntington Station revitalization project, is also overseeing in the Columbia project.
