Notebook: Mayoka Urges Food Donations

News from around the Town of Huntington.

Town Councilman Mark Mayoka is urging residents to contribute to food banks now as supplies run low during the summer.

"I have made deliveries to many of our food pantries since December and am deeply concerned about what I have discovered.  After speaking with the volunteers that run the food pantries I learned that during the summer months our food pantries often run low on basic necessities.  Food pantries are often forgotten over the summer months and this is the time when they need our assistance most.  There are 15 food pantries located throughout Huntington that need your assistance," Mayoka wrote.

Items such as pasta, spaghetti sauce, juice boxes, children snacks, cereals, peanut butter and jelly, diapers, shampoo, toothpaste, toilet paper, paper towels and cleaning products will graciously be accepted.

Residents can drop off non-perishable items at Town Hall or at the Dix Hills Ice Rink located at 575 Vanderbilt Parkway, Dix Hills.

The Town of Huntington and its Veterans Advisory Board invite Korean War veterans, their families, businesses and others to a breakfast Friday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the Korean War.

"Help us remember the end of what people have called The Forgotten War by honoring those who served," Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said, in inviting the public to attend.

The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Melville Marriott, 1350 Old Walt Whitman Road, Melville.   The Veterans Advisory Board is asking for a $28 a person donation. Proceeds from the breakfast and from a breakfast journal will be used to benefit veterans, soldiers and their families in crisis and to continue providing programs to honor, recognize and benefit veterans of all wars.

Memorial Garden Dedicated

Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Councilwoman Susan A. Berland joined the Candurra family in dedicating a garden at the Dix Hills Water District headquarters in memory of former District superintendent Vincent J. Candurra.

Candurra was a longtime district employee who eventually became superintendent. He passed away in 2010. Candurra’s widow, Colleen, donated the garden, with a bench and flowing water, as a memorial to her husband, to help symbolize his dedication to the District and his co-workers.
