Moratorium Approved on Wind Turbines

Town Board suspends action until rules are in place.

The Town Board voted Tuesday night to impose a 128-day moratorium on applications and permits for wind turbines.

The delay is designed to provide the town time to establish regulations on several aspects, including noise, size, height, zoning and use.

But with a plan pending from Canon for its headquarters in Melville, more applications expected in the future, and no regulations on the books, the town is moving toward establishing rules.

Before the Town Board’s unanimous vote, several people spoke about the need to consider how to handle wind turbine applications.

The resolution was sponsored by Councilman Mark Cuthbertson.

Canon has applied to set up 11 wind turbines at its headquarters under construction near Route 110 in Melville.
