It's Tax Day: What to Do If You Haven't Yet Filed

The closest post office with extended hours is Hicksville, but you can e-file on the IRS web site until midnight.

Your U.S. tax return is considered to be filed on time if it the envelope has a United States Postal Service postmark dated on or before April 15.

In some places, the post offices offer extended hours on tax day but HuntingtonPatch.com called area locations and Huntington, Halesite, Huntington Station, Northport, Cold Spring Harbor and Greenlawn reported regular hours.

All are closing at 5 p.m.  except for Halesite, which closes at 4 p.m. daily and will do so today, as well.

The local stations said that the closest post office with extended hours is in Hicksville, which will stay open until 9 p.m.

A post office mailbox is located outside the Lloyd Harbor Police Department but its last pick up is 1 p.m. on weekdays.

The Internal Revenue Service web site does offer free e-filing. Instructions on how to file electronically for an almost-automatic six-month extension are available, as well. The physical form, f4868, is attached to this article as well. It, too, must be postmarked by April 15. And, the IRS cautions, if you owe taxes, you will begin accruing interest on the amount owed immediately.

After you file, head over to Starbucks for a free cup of coffee. Bring you own mug.
