In His Own Words: Mayoka Again Rejects AvalonBay

Huntington Town Board member speaks about his no vote earlier this week.

Unlike other board members,  recent amendments to the AvalonBay housing project did not sway Huntington Town Board member Mark Mayoka from rejecting the project again this week after voting no last year to a similar AvalonBay proposal.

The  approved zoning for the proposed Huntington Station AvalonBay project by a 4-1 vote Monday after rejecting it last year by a 3-2 vote.

Supervisor Frank Petrone and board member Glenda Jackson voted for AvalonBay in both votes. Board members Mark Cuthbertson and Susan Berland changed their votes to support the project after changes were made in the proposal, including a reducted number of units and the elimination of a transit-oriented district.

Mayoka opposed both versions of the plan.

Mayoka was the only Huntington Town board member to speak last week in front of the Suffolk County Planning Commission in Riverhead before it voted to support the project, 11-0.
