Huntington Notebook: Skate Swap; Business Center Event

About 75 skaters exchange equipment at second annual event.

Showcasing the newly-renovated facilities at the Dix Hills Ice Rink for the first time while providing skaters with a useful outlet for skating equipment, the annual Skate Swap was a success last week in Huntington.

According to a town press release, about 75 skaters exchanged helmets, padding, jerseys, skates and other equipment Oct. 23 at the second annual event as patrons enjoyed a free skating period, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.

Swap participants droped off used equipment to the ice rink earlier in the month and received one voucher per item to swap at the event. Residents who did not donate equipment ahead of time were permitted to "Shop the Swap" with a donation to the Huntington Youth Council.

"Skating equipment is expensive, so by offering a forum where families can pick up ‘new' equipment while donating ‘old' helps everyone," said Town Board member Susan Berland, onhand for the event.

Members of the Huntington Youth Council were there to assist shoppers as they browsed through the donated merchandise.
