Huntington Notebook: Poetry Contest Begins Next Month

Winning poems to be displayed on town buses.

The Town of Huntington Public Art Advisory Committee will stage a public art initiative contest for area teens begining next month.

Huntington teens ages 14-18 are encouraged to submit original poems for the Poetry for the HART competition which runs from Sept. 1 until Feb 1.

Winners will have their work displayed in interior advertising spaces of Huntington HART buses for one year. Additionally, winning poems will be published in The Long Islander newspaper, the Huntington Public Art Inventory and on the town website.

The poems must be between 10 and 30 lines, typed or neatly printed in English in blue or black ink and accompanied by a completed entry form with valid address.

Winners will be chosen by an Artist Selection Panel composed of area poets, community youth group leaders, and representatives of the Public Art Advisory Committee based on the following criteria: Quality and creativity of the writing; age of the poet; and appropriateness of the poem’s content for public display.

  • Town Board members were on hand for the donation of more than 80 pairs of used eyeglasses provided to the Huntington Lions Club for the Give the Gift of Sight charity, according to a town press release. Individual members of The Huntington Youth Council initiated the donations within the Town of Huntington and presented them to the Lions' Recycle for Sight Program for redistribution to those in need.
  • The town lent its support to the Don Weidman SeniorNet Computer Learning Center at the annual Summer Volunteer Beach Picnic last week at the Senior Beach House at Centerport Beach. The center provides access and education on technologies and the Internet for adults aged over 50. "It was a pleasure to spend my afternoon with the staff and volunteers of the Don Weidman SeniorNet Computer Learning Center," said Town Board Member Susan Berland, in a release.
