Huntington Notebook: Dredging Begins

Round-the-clock project begins in Huntington Harbor.

For the first time in 14 years, dredging of the Centerport Harbor Navigation Channel has began.

The six-week, county-funded project aimed at facilitating recreational boating in the harbor started Oct. 1.and will include around-the-clock dredging of the channel to 12 feet below mean water to replenishing the town's Centerport Beach and the Huntington Beach Community Association beach with a total of 30,000 cubic yards of sand. Following the dredging, reseeding of the shellfish stock through its shellfish hatchery program will begin.

Some boaters will be asked to remove boats or moorings while the project is on going, according to the town. Affected boaters may move boats to Coneys' mooring field and purchase launch service from the town for the remainder of the season (until Nov. 6) at a cost of $115 for residents and $135 for non-residents. If slips are available, winter wet storage can be purchased at the standard monthly rate.

The Long Island Ducks Baseball team dedicated a game to Marine Lt. James Byler. Proceeds of last month's game were donated to assist Building Homes For Heroes in making Byler's home handicap accessible. Huntington Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts were in attendance to serve, as color guards and the American Legion were also present at the game. The Kiwanis, local vendors and many supporters contributed towards buying tickets to support this endeavor and we gratefully thank them. Aslo in attendence was Town Board Member Mark Mayoka.
