Huntington Bay: Projects and Preservation

Morrow said he is pleased with the preservation and renovation done in Huntington Bay in 2010, but knows that finances will prove to be a challenge next year.

Huntington Bay Mayor Herb Morrow is proud of all the preservation and repair work done in the village in 2010, saying he believes it is important to preserve the village's character. However, he acknowledged 2011 would prove challenging, as far as finances go.

One of the biggest accomplishments in the village this year was the completion of restoration work on Huntington Bay's village hall, Morrow said. The hall was built in 1926, and the village obtained grant money to complete renovations on it during the course of 2010. "It's important to maintain the historic aspects and preserve the character of the village," he said.

Other big projects the village completed this year included settling the police contract and fixing the village's roads. "We have a small community, only two square miles, but we do try to keep them in good repair," he said.

As for looking to 2011, the mayor said finances will prove to be "the big cloud over our head" because of uncertainty over the level of state aid.

"We're not quite sure what's going to happen in Albany," he acknowledged.

In the meantime, Morrow has advised village officials to stay active in the community outside of Huntington Bay. "We're not an island in Huntington Bay. Village officials need to be active - in the town of Huntington and in things going on in New York State."
