Harbormaster Gets Power to Cut Speed

Huntington Town Board votes to let harbormaster determine when to drop speed limit for special events.

The Huntington harbormaster has been granted the power to determine when to cut speeds for special events on the water.

The voted unanimously Wednesday to allow the harbormaster to decide when a temporary 5 MPH limit is appropriate. A similar limit was set for the .

Boating experts have stepped up calls for more safety measures after the July 4 that claimed the lives of three children. Pam Setchell, president of the , which runs the music fest, and others have urged lower limits for special events.

With the new authority, the harbormaster will not have to ask board approval to set the limits for each event.

The Town also moved to acquire a in July.
