Group to Protest Action in Syria

Candlelight vigil set Monday night in Huntington to urge vote against intervention.

Members of Moveon.org plan a candlelight vigil in Huntington Monday to urge local congressional members to vote against bombing Syria.

The vigil is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Park Avenue and Main Street, and is part of a campaign by progressive groups around the country to oppose a strike against Syria in response to use of chemical weapons on its own citizens.

The group is asking four Long Island members of Congress, Democrats Steve Israel of Huntington, Tim Bishop of Southampton, Carolyn McCarthy of Mineola and Republican Peter King of Massapequa to vote against authorization of action.

John Moore, the local organizer, said, “I am opposed to military intervention in Syria because U.S. intervention in a two year old Syrian civil war will only lead to more bloodshed.”

The demonstration is expected to last about 45 minutes.
