Huntington Library Budget Information and Candidates Meeting

Huntington School District 3 Residents! Bring your questions related to the 2012-2013 Proposed Library Budget and meet the two candidates, Paul Ehrlich and Jairo Sanin, who are contending for one open position on the Library's Board of Trustees. See in-depth information on the Library's website at www.thehuntingtonlibrary.org.

Below, you may read each candidate's answer to the following question: What is the most important issue facing the Library? Please give concrete examples of what you can do if elected to bring about the necessary changes.

Paul Ehrlich:
Public libraries all over the country are going through a transformation.  The long range planning of resource allocation is vital and will be a primary role of the trustees.  Libraries are no longer simply a book repository.  They have taken on new roles including a media center where patrons in the community can work, study or entertain themselves.  Through on-line resources and the Live-brary services offered through our county affiliation, library patrons in the community are relying more and more on these new kinds of facilities.  Patrons have also come to rely on the library as a place where they can conduct activities as a group.  The limits put upon the library by the economy and the tax cap, create a need for a trustee who recognizes this transformation and has the background to provide leadership.  My business background and five months as a trustee and member of the long range planning committee has given me the needed insight and experience in addressing these challenges.

I ask for your vote to ensure that every taxpayer gets a better return on their tax dollars. We need to build partnerships with businesses and nonprofits in order to bring in new revenue streams and maximize the use of every tax dollar, attracting programs free of cost to the tax payer. The Huntington Station library is under-utilized and could serve as more of a community hub, becoming a model of quality service delivery. Additionally, bringing new technological advancements into the library is an important priority to offer continually improving services, maximizing the return on every tax dollar.
