Cuthbertson: Easter Egg Mess Was My Fault

In a Facebook note, the councilman said the turnout was beyond expectations.

Huntington Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson took the blame for what he called a "poorly-executed Easter Egg hunt" at Heckscher Park on Friday.

Writing to his 719 Facebook friends, Cuthbertson stated "We never dreamed we would get that many people. But the blame belongs with me and I take complete responsibility. If we do it again next year, we will have learned a valuable lesson. Sorry in particular to all the disappointed children. Hope everyone has an enjoyable Easter."

The town placed 1,600 plastic eggs filled with stickers and jelly beans in the park for an 11 a.m. hunt, which ended up not being nearly enough when 1,000 children showed up. Younger toddlers were shut out when children as old as 10 years of age started collecting the prizes.

Some parents slammed the event because it put younger kids at risk.

Town Supervisor Frank Petrone on Friday also weighed in, saying "We've learned some things, such as we should have different age groups go at different times, that we will definitely use going forward."
