County to Spray for West Nile

Aerial spraying set for Thursday to get rid of disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Suffolk County will spray parts of the town Thursday evening to eradicate  mosquitoes that might be carrying the West Nile virus.

The aerial spraying is scheduled for 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., the Suffolk County Health Department said.

Workers from the Suffolk County of Works will spray parts of Elwood, Greenlawn and  East Northport, including: an area bounded on the south by Little Plains Road, Elwood Road and Jericho Turnpike;  on the west by Greenlawn Broadway, on the north by the Long Island Rail Road and on the east by Town Line Road.

The Health Department said the workers be using an ultra-low-volume aerosol of the pesticide Scourge (resmethrin).

For safety's sake, the department said children and pregnant women should avoid exposure. If possible, remain inside or avoid the area whenever spraying takes place and for about 30 minutes afterward; Close windows and doors and close the vents of window air-conditioning units to circulate indoor air or, before spraying begins, turn them off.  Windows and air-conditioning vents can be reopened about 30 minutes after spraying.

If you come in direct contact with pesticide spray, protect your eyes.  If you get pesticide spray in your eyes, immediately rinse them with water.  Wash exposed skin.  Wash clothes that come in direct contact with spray separately from other laundry.

It also said residents might want to  rinse homegrown fruits and vegetables  thoroughly with water before cooking or eating;  bring laundry and small toys inside before spraying begins;  Bring pet food and water dishes inside, and cover ornamental fishponds.
