Coral Park Plan Takes Step Forward

Town Board votes to allocate funds to push proposal to next phase.

Plans for a town park on Broadway-Greenlawn Road took a step forward this week when the Town Board voted to allocate more funds for its development.

Coral Park has been under discussion for more than a decade, with the most recent delay involving the refusal by Suffolk County to place a traffic light near the proposed park.

Traffic and the safety of pedestrians crossing the road to the park on the east side of the road near the Leigh Street intersection has been a stumbling block. The latest plan calls for a "bulb-out," or curb that would narrow Broadway at tha point and slow drivers down.

The Town Board voted to shift money that would have paid for the traffic light to the development of the park. Among the amenities planned for the park are playground, basketball court, picnic area, chess/checker tablesand fitness/cardio stations.

Town Board member Susan Berland, who has long been a proponent of the park, acknowledged the many delays but said she is determined to see the park open. "The problem with any of these projects is it takes a long time,"  she said.
