Cellphones to Aid Haiti
Donation boxes to collect phones for recycling as Haitian quake fundraiser
Town Councilwoman Glenda A. Jackson Tuesday announced a new program to aid victims of the devastating Haitian earthquake.
Town residents can donate used or unwanted cellphones, which will be donated and recycled, with proceeds going to the American Red Cross.
Many materials used to manufacture cellphones can be recycled to make new products. Metals, plastics, batteries and the packaging materials can be recycled and turned into new products.

Local businesses are also invited to participate by providing dropoff space for a "Phones for Haiti" donation box and poster, which will be provided by the town.
A box will also be placed in the Town Hall lobby. For more information, call 351-3112.

Donors are reminded to first terminate their service on the phone. Phone service providers can also address such security and privacy concerns as removing the SIM card and clearing contact information.
"This tragedy will take years to overcome and every dollar collected towards this effort will be precious," Jackson said. "Donating in this way will not overburden anyone's budget."
The Jan.12 earthquake killed more than 230,000 people, the Haitian government said Tuesday.
