Brush Fire Causes LIRR Delays

Several lines affected by fire near New Hyde Park station.

The Long Island Rail Road reported that its service was close to normal for the evening commute on Tuesday after a brush fire near the New Hyde Park station caused delays of up to 20 minutes on the main line.

The small brush fire occurred east of the station near Nassau Terminal Road in Garden City Park at about 5:50 p.m. Members of the New Hyde Park Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the small fire which was near the third rail. The fire was extinguished at about 6 p.m.

Customers riding the Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches of the LIRR were advised to take alternate service on the Babylon/ Montauk branches. A 5:53 p.m. train from Penn Station due to Ronkonkoma at 7:11 p.m. and a 6:01 p.m. train from Penn Station due at Hicksville at 6:45 p.m. were cancelled.
