Big Turnout In Lloyd Harbor Election

Land use the major issue among voters in today's election involving eight candidates for mayor and trustees.

Lloyd Harbor residents are turning out in large numbers today for the village election. 

With four village board positions on the line, including mayor, a steady stream of voters has made their way to since polls opened at noon, according to village representatives.

The predominant issue among voters coming from the polls today is apparently village preservation and land use.

"Keeping the village a rural setting as much as possible," said Ed Smith of Lloyd Harbor, standing in line to register at village hall today.

Longtime resident Mary Lenore Blair said she is most concerned about maintaining the natural beauty and the general atmosphere of the place.

"Under-development please, and not having to develop every square inch," said Blair, a Long Island native and a resident of Lloyd Harbor for 16 years.

Eight Lloyd Harbor candidates are running for four positions in the race.

Mayor Leland Hairr, of the Quality of Life Party, is running against challenger George Schwertl of the Lloyd Harbor Families Party. Hairr has served since 1999.

Current board trustees and Quality of Life Party candidates Leland Deane, Jean Thatcher and Hilary Rolih are facing opposition from Sandra Bianco, Danielle Sulger and Kieran McGowan, all Families Party candidates.

The top three trustee candidates and the mayoral race winner will serve 4-year terms.

Polls close at 9 p.m. today.
