Updated: Huntington Area Power Outage Report

Local power outages reported here as crews repair damage from two storms.

LIPA reported Saturday that 8,583 customers are without power in the Town of Huntington. The number of customers declined in most areas but increased in West Hills.

LIPA reports that 647 linemen and 412 tree trimmers are working to restore power throughout the Town of Huntington as of Friday. Hundreds lost power during the Nor'Easter, many of whom just had their power restored after prolonged outages after Hurricane Sandy.

Follow these safety tips from LIPA during outage periods:

  • Working around potentially live electric wires is extremely dangerous. Please do not take it upon yourself to clear blocked roads and remove downed trees.  We ask you to be patient and wait for experienced crews to arrive.

  • All LIPA and National Grid employees carry identification badges, and almost all restoration work can be completed without entering your home.  For your own safety, please check the ID of anyone asking to enter your home.

  • Stay out of flooded basements, even if the power is out.  Stay clear of the breaker box if it’s in a flooded basement.

  • You should only operate a backup generator outdoors away from windows and vents.  Disconnect from the electric system by shutting off the main breaker located in the electric service panel.  Failure to do this could jeopardize the safety of crews working to restore power.

Here are outages in the Town of Huntington as of Saturday morning. The number of people without power is higher than the customer figure.

Update, Thurs. 10:30 a.m.

LIPA reports that 511 linemen and 427 tree trimmers are working to restore power throughout the Town of Huntington as of Wednesday. Hundreds lost power during the Nor'Easter, many of whom just had their power restored after prolonged outages after Hurricane Sandy.

Thursday's weather may impede restoration efforts, said LIPA, because they must also ensure the safety of their workforce. LIPA added that, when possible, crews will restore power to customers who have been without power for the longest time.

Update, Wed.

More people lost power in Huntington Wednesday night as a nor'easter brought high winds, cold and snow to the area.

At 7:30 p.m., LIPA reported that the number of outages had grown from more than 13,000 Wednesday morning to more than 18,000 customers.

Suffolk County Legis. Dr. William Spencer, chief of otolaryngology at Huntington Hospital, has been warning constituents about the dangers of cold, including emailing this information:

"Keeping warm is more than a comfort issue. It is a matter of life and death. In its early stages, hypothermia -- too-low body temperature -- is hard to recognize. That makes it especially deadly, as many people don't know it is happening and become unable to take care of themselves.

"Many people think it has to be freezing outside before they can get hypothermia. But if a person is wet from rain or sweat, hypothermia can set in at temperatures well above 40 F. Babies, particularly those asleep in cold rooms also are at risk. People who have been drinking alcohol also risk hypothermia, as do some people suffering from mental illnesses."

A shelter is available at the Village Green as of Wednesday and multiple warming centers are open around town.

I live in South Huntington and haven't had power in 9 days. One half of my street got it back a few days ago but my half of the street did not. Then today they lost it again but have gotten it back once again! It is freezing in my house yet when my husband spoke to a rude LIPA outage manager today he was told that no crews were currently scheduled to work on our area! I am beyond angry! I am apoplectic! There has been little to no communication between LIPA and their customers. That is inexcusable and unacceptable! They are a monopoly and I am sick and tired of being at their mercy!!

I was without power for 7 days; it returned on Sunday. Then last night it dropped out at 6:30. But happily the power came back at 7:30 PM - not bad. Perhaps Elaine should call FEMA or one of her newly elected/reelected politicians to find out what they can do for her. Nine days is unacceptable. South Huntington is not Long Beach where restoring power is next to impossible. C'mon LIPA; do your jobs! You get paid on time. Give what you get!

I'm in South Huntington as well and have not had power since last Monday night yet all around my neighborhood there are lights on save a few streets. It's beyond frustrating that I have not seen one truck down my block, though I have been back at work since this monday. I've tried calling LIPA and my local representative, neither have been much help but at least my Rep seemed concerned and he also has had no power.

Asharoken Mayor Greg Letica reports the sand dunes held.

I am in total agreeement with you Elaine. LIPA does not even answer their phones anymore - it says call back later! that's as of Thurs 11/08 at 12 noon. Not one truck on our back streets Bunker Hill and Beaver Hill lane to remove trees and downed lines. We are now probably looking at another week without power --- That's my own estimate - BECAUSE LIPA REFUSES TO GIVE US ANY INFORMATION

Without power since the beginning, like so many others. Power all around except on our street of 25 homes. Just been told by LIPA crew, no power until the 27th....are you kidding....On hold with LIPA for over one hour and 25 minutes.... Hire more operators. This is a JOKE and a bad one at that.

LIPA = long island powerless again !
Michael Balk November 10, 2012 at 01:40 pm
The best protest that may get LIPA's attention is the lack of money. Suggest taking the same amount of care and attention concerning the payment of your LIPA bill as the company has concerning your family. Do not feed the beast - simply don't pay your bill. It may be the only form of civil protest that will effect change.
Ron November 10, 2012 at 04:06 pm
Sure right Mike- you go first and when they turn your power off you'd be running to the LIPA with cash.

If most of the whiners here had half a brain, they would have bout a generator a long time ago. The only one you have to blame is yourself for being short sighted and unprepared. Awww,,you cant use Facebook....Poor slobs.

LIPA's numbers are not accurate. While at work, got a phone call from a LIPA rep for another reason, but she mentioned on the date that "Northport's coming back, only 363 without power." I told her that number was not accurate at all. Because during that phone call, all of Main Street, Bayview Avenue, Woodbine Avenue and the roads flanking Main Street were without power. Just the area in discussion is well over LIPA's estimated number. Don't use LIPA's online "outage map" nor should you accept the estimates they've quoted to media and other sources as accurate.

Usually cats stay within a few houses of home Sometimes they just hunker down under a neighbor'sRead More shed or deck. He is more likely to come to you at night when there aren't as many lawn mower sounds. Walk around with a can of the stinkiest cat food that you can find. Call to him, and listen for a response. He may answer you with soft meows. Make a trail of stinky cat food to your door and leave the can at the door overnight. Hang up signs with a photo in the neighborhood. Go door to door and tell neighbors to call you if they see him. Kids playing, and dog walkers might spot him. Once you have an idea, of where he is, you can use a have a heart trap to catch him, if he won't come to you. Some cats get so scared when they get out, that they don't recognize their humans. We have had cats disappear for months, before trapping them.

Tuesday about 7am at the intersection of Jericho and 110-I think it was 3 cars with an overturnedRead More silver SUV. Saw it right after it happened-about 7 people were trying to push the SUV upright

We've checked with authorities on this and they say there were no major injuries. While we try toRead More get to every serious accident, we're not going to be able to cover everything that happens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
