Updated: Huntington Area Power Outage Report

Local power outages reported here as crews repair damage from two storms.

LIPA reported Saturday that 8,583 customers are without power in the Town of Huntington. The number of customers declined in most areas but increased in West Hills.

LIPA reports that 647 linemen and 412 tree trimmers are working to restore power throughout the Town of Huntington as of Friday. Hundreds lost power during the Nor'Easter, many of whom just had their power restored after prolonged outages after Hurricane Sandy.

Follow these safety tips from LIPA during outage periods:

  • Working around potentially live electric wires is extremely dangerous. Please do not take it upon yourself to clear blocked roads and remove downed trees.  We ask you to be patient and wait for experienced crews to arrive.

  • All LIPA and National Grid employees carry identification badges, and almost all restoration work can be completed without entering your home.  For your own safety, please check the ID of anyone asking to enter your home.

  • Stay out of flooded basements, even if the power is out.  Stay clear of the breaker box if it’s in a flooded basement.

  • You should only operate a backup generator outdoors away from windows and vents.  Disconnect from the electric system by shutting off the main breaker located in the electric service panel.  Failure to do this could jeopardize the safety of crews working to restore power.

Here are outages in the Town of Huntington as of Saturday morning. The number of people without power is higher than the customer figure.

LIPA reports that 511 linemen and 427 tree trimmers are working to restore power throughout the Town of Huntington as of Wednesday. Hundreds lost power during the Nor'Easter, many of whom just had their power restored after prolonged outages after Hurricane Sandy.

Thursday's weather may impede restoration efforts, said LIPA, because they must also ensure the safety of their workforce. LIPA added that, when possible, crews will restore power to customers who have been without power for the longest time.

Update, Wed.

More people lost power in Huntington Wednesday night as a nor'easter brought high winds, cold and snow to the area.

At 7:30 p.m., LIPA reported that the number of outages had grown from more than 13,000 Wednesday morning to more than 18,000 customers.

Suffolk County Legis. Dr. William Spencer, chief of otolaryngology at Huntington Hospital, has been warning constituents about the dangers of cold, including emailing this information:

"Keeping warm is more than a comfort issue. It is a matter of life and death. In its early stages, hypothermia -- too-low body temperature -- is hard to recognize. That makes it especially deadly, as many people don't know it is happening and become unable to take care of themselves.

"Many people think it has to be freezing outside before they can get hypothermia. But if a person is wet from rain or sweat, hypothermia can set in at temperatures well above 40 F. Babies, particularly those asleep in cold rooms also are at risk. People who have been drinking alcohol also risk hypothermia, as do some people suffering from mental illnesses."

A shelter is available at the Village Green as of Wednesday and multiple warming centers are open around town.
