All Roads Closed in Huntington

Residents urged to stay off roads; no HART bus service.

Update at 8:05 p.m. Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone Saturday announced that all town roads are closed.

And Suffolk County police announced that the LIE would be closed for most of the day Sunday for plowing.

The National Weather Service said Huntington was hit by 29 inches of snow between Friday and early Saturday morning, one of the hardest hit areas on Long Island.

LIRR train service between Huntington and New York City is on a two-hour instead of hourly schedule. Some trains have been canceled because of storm-related mechanical problems.

Whitman High School's plan for a Saturday evening performance of Wonderful Town was canceled but plans to still have the show Sunday at 6 p.m.

See the Patch photo gallery and add your pictures here.

This is the text of the telephone message Petrone sent out via the Huntington Alert system:

Roads in the Town are treacherous. As we all dig out from last night's blizzard, it vital for your safety and the safety of others that you stay home today. Roads must remain clear so emergency vehicles can get through and unnecessary traffic will compromise their ability to do so. Keeping off the roads will also allow snow-clearing crews to do their jobs without interference.

All roads in the Town are officially closed.  HART bus is not operating today. All activities at Town facilities have been canceled.

If your power is out, you should call the LIPA hotline at 1-800-490-0075. If a tree is blocking a road, call the Highway Hotline at 499-0444. For Town-related emergencies, call the Public Safety Department at 271-2157 or 271-6573.

Town employees are working with outside contractors to clear roads and get us back to normal as quickly as possible. Crews will be clearing through tomorrow. But do not think that because your street is cleared, that means it is safe to venture out.  Even if your street has been cleared, that does not mean the next street over is passable.

Enjoy the day at home with your family. Be careful, be safe and be warm.

Does anyone know how 25 A in huntington is? How about huntington bay rd? I'm southern and do not own a plow, but if we did, we would be offering all our neighbors help! Yes, where is the town, but what about people w plows? People just not have them? Maybe
GreenlawnCD February 10, 2013 at 04:45 am
I found this link to "submit your service request" about snow and ice issues that you can fill out. If you go to the town's home page it's also the link at the top called "Huntington @ Your Service".

Dear TOH: E Npt. longtime resident, been though many snowstorms and usually clean-up has been good but clearly NOT this time, have NOT had one plow down my street since very early on in the storm. Do realize we have ALOT of snow to clean up but this is un-acceptable at this point . Some, any information on when can expect to see some plows of ANY kind in our neighborhoods would be greatly appreciated-
Rick Ansalone February 10, 2013 at 05:06 am
We Live on Parsons dr in Dix Hills , and haven't seen a plow last nite or today , what's the deal here ? Gov Cuomo deployed hundreds of city trucks/ plows not needed in the 5 boros to assist in the Suffolk cleanup, where are they ? I just heard that they're using these plows to cleanup the LIE.. Who made this bonehead decision ? Who pays their salaries ?
Chris Mathews February 10, 2013 at 05:26 am
Jesse Drive still no plow. Come on guys, this is BS.
liberal February 10, 2013 at 10:48 am
still no plow.entire block stranded
JSC February 10, 2013 at 12:01 pm
We were lucky I guess. Had a guy come through 3 times during the storm and once the next morning - I think it was the same guy each time. We only have one narrow lane, but at least we can get out. I hope the rest of you can get out today.
Check on your elderly neighbors! Help shovel them out and see if they need anything!

Will roads in Huntington be officially open on Sunday? Will we get notified?
Jen February 10, 2013 at 12:51 pm
My street has been plowed by private contractors during and after the blizzard.
Jane Johnson February 10, 2013 at 01:01 pm
After working a double shift at the hospital it was very disappointing to see my cul de sac was not plowed making it impossible for me to get in my driveway. Paying 11,000.00 dollars in taxes for what? Thanks Naughton or should I call you Ed Norton?
JEvan February 10, 2013 at 01:02 pm
Centerport off of Little Neck Rd., no plows, except for the small pickup truck with a plow who got stuck and left without plowing. Seaspray, Waterview, Mallard and Harbor Park Drive, stranded!
Eric Bradley February 10, 2013 at 01:17 pm
We have had worst storms than this one. Who dropped the ball on getting the side streets plowed? We all pay soooooo much in taxes already!!! Is this what u call cut backs!! This is not right. Not one plowed down our street. Come on people get your act together!!!!
Eric Bradley February 10, 2013 at 01:30 pm
Finally, I plow came down our street. WOW!!!
This is still not acceptable!!!! However, thank goodness we did not lose power!
Errol Menendez February 10, 2013 at 01:51 pm
i'd like to know this as well. we didnt received notification that the roads were closed in the first place! my street (w. 19th st.) was partially plowed (still hard pack snow tho) and rt 110 are clear, so i would have never known. also, i ventured to check on family out east last night around 8 and as soon as i hit exit 59, it turned to 100% snow covered roadway; i mean ever single lane! . i had to turn around by exit 60 it was so bad. so as someone mentioned earlier, maybe the resources are being used to clear the expressways and parkways before our streets get clear? not that this is any consolation to residents stranded on their own blocks. thanks Patch for keeping us updated!!
Precious Box February 10, 2013 at 01:53 pm
It is being said that outside contractors are being brought in? Does this mean out of town? or non union? Is the lack of plowing due to the town not subcontracting non union plowers or are we waiting for the out of town plows to get here?,,,either way, i've lived here all my life and have never seen ,,,I won't even call it slow,,,because there hasn't even been a plow through my area yet,,,so i've never seen a non existent plowing situation before,,,this is deplorable,,,I am only paying $13334.00 in taxes. Maybe since a lot of us are having the same problem we are paying too little? (highly sarcastic),,,The phone number for the Town of Huntington Highways is 631.499.0444,,,call to express your disgust and don't forget to vote out those responsible in the next election.
Parsons Dr February 10, 2013 at 02:49 pm
This is absolutely ridiculous!!! I can't believe the plows didn't even pass once through Parsons dr - off of rt231. I am a doctor and I can't get to the hospital to see my patients. I tried driving on the snow with 4x4 and couldn't go more the 10 feet!!! I asked the town if they will be plowing all night and they said it was to cold to plow at night.... I couldn't believ that - maybe they will be able to plow in July when it is warmer. Not to mention my wife is pregnant and close to due date. I love paying all these taxes and getting no service.
A Taxpayer February 10, 2013 at 02:51 pm
Dartmouth Court off Bellerose Avenue in East Northport (near the LIRR station) just got plowed, two days after the storm. The town should be ashamed of itself. In other countries when such a fiasco occurs the politicians have enough honor to resign their positions. Of course, our town officials would never do any such thing, they are too addicted to their power, perks and privileges of their offices.
Christine February 10, 2013 at 03:00 pm
What I don't understand is why there were no plows during the storm. In the past they had plows work through the night. It seems they waited until Saturday morning. My road was plowed, but I watched a Town of Huntington plow who had no idea how to use his plow. First too low, scraping and getting stuck. Then piling a huge berm in front of my driveway instead of my lawn. Apparently they need some training.
Vic Mackey February 10, 2013 at 03:01 pm
The citizens of TOH should ask Naughton for his resignation, effective immediately!
Patrick McNelis February 10, 2013 at 03:13 pm
Furwood Court in East Northport not plowed. We are all stuck. :(
Concerned Citizen February 10, 2013 at 03:50 pm
And these business owners are paying contractors for the service. Did you ever think that the cut in the town budget that stems from all of the whining taxpayers if the reason for this deplorable response to snow challenged roads. So typical that people cry about taxes and then the moment their needs are not serviced immediately they whine about how inefficient government is... Taxes are high, I get it. But this thinking of wanting it on both ends is just obtuse.
JEvan February 10, 2013 at 03:52 pm
Finally, 2 town trucks plowing and sanding. of course both of them getting stuck!
Concerned Citizen February 10, 2013 at 03:58 pm
Perhaps our town officials could have spent more time discussing emergency responses and safety issues for all of Huntington than spending time talking about Bamboo for the past several months.
Pat February 10, 2013 at 04:34 pm
This is the worst response to a blizzard/storm ever. Here in Elwood I haven't even seen any town plows, only private. The TOH has become a disgrace. We are senior citizens paying high taxes, and after living here since 1975, I think it's time to leave. I just pray that there haven't been any medical emergencies in my area. Vote everyone out next election!!
Leslie Rurup February 10, 2013 at 05:31 pm
Well, it's true, we here in Brookhaven DO HAVE THAT WEBSITE, to let them know our street hasn't been plowed yet. We accessed it Saturday at noon. It is now Sunday at noon and, even though a secondary cross-street (Fife Drive) is done (we can see the cars going by,) we are still unplowed. With this deep accumulation, I'd like to think they're doing the best they can, but if my husband & I can't get out to work tomorrow, I will not be happy.
ohboy February 10, 2013 at 05:49 pm
My street, which is rarely plowed without a phone call to the highway department was surprisingly plowed, although the side street which is 3 lanes off of Jericho is a mere car (not SUV) wide for two way traffic and a left turn lane and the snow piled high on both sides so someone coming in will not see the person in that mere lane.

4th Ave and President.. North of Jericho off New York Ave
Our first "plowing" was from large trucks and SUV's driving down the road leaving a small path. We had ONE plow come in sometime this morning but they did a really BAD job leaving only a 8 ft wide path in the snow and it didn't do much to clear the ground, it's still snowy and slick. It took my fiancee 2 hours to dig out the driveway and clear a path to the "road" so he can get out to work tomorrow. I've lived in 3 states and 5 different cities. I've lived on busy main roads and back neighborhood roads and in my entire life this is the worst response I've ever seen from a town! I'm disabled and in a wheelchair. Until the town does a much better job I'm not going anywhere alone if my fiancee is gone because if I get stuck going in or out of my driveway because of poorly plowed roads or because of a berm I'm screwed. I expected more from a town I heard such great things about (We've lived here 4 years now).
Rick Ansalone February 10, 2013 at 11:34 pm
The plowing on Parsons Dr @ 1PM was shotty at best. As my neighbors and i cleaned up what was left behind.
I'm Very disappointed in the handling of this 30+ inch event as i felt like a hostage all weekend . Time for change !
Eric Bradley February 11, 2013 at 03:03 am
Thanks a lot town of huntington for not plowing our roads correctly. Now the schools are closed. Buses can't drive in this mess. What a waste of our taxes. Really!!! This has really snow bowled into something else. What a waste!!!!

Just a short thought to get the word out quickly about anything in your neighborhood.
Share something with your neighbors. Write a new post... What's up? Make an announcement, speak your mind, or sell something

Usually cats stay within a few houses of home Sometimes they just hunker down under a neighbor'sRead More shed or deck. He is more likely to come to you at night when there aren't as many lawn mower sounds. Walk around with a can of the stinkiest cat food that you can find. Call to him, and listen for a response. He may answer you with soft meows. Make a trail of stinky cat food to your door and leave the can at the door overnight. Hang up signs with a photo in the neighborhood. Go door to door and tell neighbors to call you if they see him. Kids playing, and dog walkers might spot him. Once you have an idea, of where he is, you can use a have a heart trap to catch him, if he won't come to you. Some cats get so scared when they get out, that they don't recognize their humans. We have had cats disappear for months, before trapping them.

Tuesday about 7am at the intersection of Jericho and 110-I think it was 3 cars with an overturnedRead More silver SUV. Saw it right after it happened-about 7 people were trying to push the SUV upright
Pam Robinson (Editor) June 13, 2013 at 05:13 pm
We've checked with authorities on this and they say there were no major injuries. While we try toRead More get to every serious accident, we're not going to be able to cover everything that happens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Well it looked bad-glad that the drivers are ok.
