Agreeing to Play Nice

Radio contributor and board debate negative ads.

Radio talk show contributor Larry Kelly went to the meeting Tuesday night to complain about ads, primarily those directed against Republicans, and ask why members of the board didn't denounce them.

"These Democratic mailings impugned Herb Morrow and Gene Cook," Kelly said, referring to Cook, who participated in his first official Town Board meeting Tuesday night, and Herb Morrow, the mayor of Huntington Bay, who ran unsuccessfully for a seat. "This negative advertising was met with silence."

After listening for a few minutes, Town Board members agreed that negative ads had no place in campaigns. Member Susan Berland, though, suggested Kelly should address the ads directed against Democrats, especially those she described as anti-Semitic and aimed at her. She said her rabbi had received an anonymous letter telling him not to attend Sunday's Town Board inauguration.

When she asked Kelly a question about ads from Republicans, he replied, "I have no idea. I'm from Islip."

She suggested he follow up by talking to the Suffolk County Board of Elections.
