Update: Man Accused of Fatally Stabbing Stepfather

Huntington resident faces charge of second-degree murder.

A Huntington man was arrested and charged Saturday in the fatal stabbing of his stepfather, Suffolk County police said.

Matthew Hubrins, 28, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Noel Mohammed, 44.

Police were called to 161 Spring Road, Huntington, at 1:20 a.m. Saturday morning after a caller reported a disturbance to police. Mohammed, who lived in the home, was taken to Huntington Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to police.

Hubrins is scheduled to be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Anyone with information is asked to call 631-852-6392 or 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential, according to police.

Noel was such a nice man. I only moved onto Spring in January and he introduced himself immediately. He told me he lived up the street and that if I ever needed anything just to ask. I looked forward to seeing him every day with his cute little safari hat. I am extremely saddened by his passing. We have truly lost a wonderful person. He was kind and considerate and I'm grateful I knew him, even for just a short time. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time, rest in peace Noel. <3

Noel was a wonderful man. Always with a smile on his face and a hop in his step. He was eager to listen and nice to speak with. His life was cut to short. He had a gentile, caring quality about him. Would wave hi to the homeowners as he delivered the mail. Would always go the extra mile. Noel was a great postman, the best but most importantly a Good Man who was quick with a word and a prayer. We are going to miss you. Good by friend.

Noel was our Mailman for nearly 10 years. He always had a smile on his face and made time to stop and say hello. He made a point to say Happy Birthday to us, as he would deliver our birthday cards every year. I am very saddened by this horrible news. He will surely be missed by our family.

Noel was our mail carrier since we moved to Huntington 12 years ago. I always had a gatorade for him on those hot summer days--helped him run from house to house in his safari hat. I have two young children who adore him and can not tell them of this tragedy. We feel such loss. He was a community icon as far as we are concerned, everyone knew Noel and he knew everyone.

I couldn't believe it. He was so nice and always friendly. Very sad to hear this tragic news.

I am truly heartbroken. My thoughts are with his family and everyone else whose lives he touched.

Still in shock. Just chatted with Noel while he delivered our mail on Friday afternoon. He wished me a Happy Birthday and said he would have given me a card if he had known. He was that kind and considerate by nature. He called all of my 3 kids by name and always had a treat ready for our dog. Trying to make sense of this devastating loss.

Noel was a special person, who brightened everyone's day. I'm grateful to have known him. Rest in peace..

My daughter works in an office on one of Noel's routes. She also commented about how nice of a guy he was. He even remembered her name though the mail at the office wasn't addressed to her! She was truly saddened by his tragic death.

I cannot believe he is gone. Noel touched so many people with his smile, energy and kind heart. He was someone that went over and beyond the call of duty. He was such an amazing soul. I am so sad to know he is no longer with us. A true walking angel....he is home now

Such a shock to this community. My husband and I moved to this area in early 2012 and Noel went out of his way to introduce himself and welcome us to the neighborhood. We could tell, even in the short time we knew him, that he was a very unique and caring person. We will miss his friendly smile and sweet nature...as will our three dogs who excitedly greeted him when they happened to see him during their walks. Rest in peace....

Noel was a wonderful man who had a beautiful spirit. He was happy every day. He seems to love delivering our mail and talking with everyone. This is such a loss to everyone who knew this beautiful soul! Rest in Peace Noel!

So Sad to hear the news this morning of Noel. :( I just spoke with him on friday afternoon as he delivered the mail and was wondering how he could remember so many first names of the people he would see everyday. He always had a smile and kind word when I would see him. May God Bless him and his family he will be missed by many.

I am still in shock. Noel always brought sunshine to my day. How many people get to know their postman in this crazy day and age. I can't believe he is gone.

18 years ago Noel hand delivered my College Diploma to me. When I told him what it was in the envelope, he dropped his mail bag and clapped for me as I opened it. Having finished in summer school due to a college tranfer, he was my only audience when being handed the diploma. I will never forget his excitement for me at that moment and I have told that story dozens of times since . He was a good man and will be missed.

Huntington Hearing, Elm Street and all of Huntington has lost a truly wonderful young man. Noel always asked about our family members by name, and if you were lucky, he shared a few proud moments of his own. Never a birthday went by without a huge hug from him. I had the pleasure of sitting at the back of his church on his wedding day - and I will have the honor of returning to that church, and pay my respects as he leaves us. I hope he knew how much we all loved him.

Noel, our neighbor and our mailman, was a wonderful, warm, caring person. When we moved to Huntington five years ago, he welcomed us and over the years we deeply appreciated his unfailing kindness and friendliness. As others have said, he often shared in the small moments of our daily life. It was heart-breaking to learn of his sudden death. He will be deeply missed -- he was one of those bright souls who help to create a true sense of community. Our prayers go out to his lovely wife and the rest of his family. I read, in The Long Islander I believe, that there is a Memorial Fund set up in Noel's name and there will be a Memorial Walk along his mail route at some point. Please keep us in the loop. Thank you.
