Syosset Student Killed by LIRR Train

Train was westbound from Huntington.

A Syosset student was identified Tuesday as the man killed by a Long Island Rail Road train westbound from Huntington.

MTA police said Jonghun Lee, 18, of Syosset, was killed Monday night in Syosset.

He was struck  about 11:15 p.m. by the 10:56 p.m. train from Huntington to Penn Station. The collision occurred about 600 feet east of Robbins Lane.

The conductor saw the accident and immediately stopped the train, said Syosset Fire Department Assistant Chief Pete Silver. MTA Police were also at the scene immediately following the incident.

Lee was found about 200 feet east of the Robbins Lane crossing, Newsday reported.

Trains were held on the Port Jefferson LIRR branch as crews secured the scene. MTA officials said trains were held for about two hours.

Officials could not confirm why Lee was on the tracks, saying the investigation was ongoing.

Lee's peers were saddened by the news.

"The kid made everyone smile and was one of the funniest and nicest kids in our school," said Syosset High School senior Jake Asman. "He just was a really well liked kid."

"...he had an exceptional capacity for humor, seemingly able to make others laugh & smile with ease," tweeted Syosset alum John Lafazan.

Trains travel at full speed at that location, according to Silver. A man was struck and killed at the same crossing last April.
