Suffolk Police Warn of Marathon Online Scam

Suffolk County Police are warning residents to beware of Internet scams associated with the bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday.
Internet watch groups and security experts have identified multiple fake website domains and social media accounts that claim to be associated with the Boston Marathon bombings. Several accounts, some of which claim to be raising money for victims, began popping up only hours after the incident and experts believe the number of these accounts will rise in the coming days, police said.
Users are advised to use the following guidelines regarding solicitations for donations:

  • Do not open unsolicited emails or click any links or attachments inside.
  • Be cautious of all emails and websites that claim to provide information on an event, as they may contain viruses.
  • Never send sensitive information over the Internet before confirming a website’s legitimacy and security. Malicious websites may look identical to a legitimate website with a different URL (.com vs. .net).
