Sailboat Capsizes in LI Sound

Suffolk Police boat rescues three men from waters off Target Rock Tuesday evening when sailboat overturns.

Three men were fished from the Long Island Sound by Suffolk Police Marine Bureau officers Tuesday evening after their sailboat overturned and sank off Target Rock, police said. 

Stephen Cozey, 22, of Syosset, was operating a 23-foot Pierson sailboat when a heavy gust of wind capsized it, spilling Cozey and two passengers – Matt Kruger, 22, of Syosset, and Trevor Howard, 21, of Key West, Fla. – into the Sound.

The incident happened approximately 300 yards off Target Rock in Huntington at about 6:30 p.m.

Police said the men were not wearing life jackets, but were rescued minutes later unharmed thanks in part to a good Samaritan.

A man in his backyard on Sea Crest Dive in Lloyd Harbor saw the boat overturn and put out a VHF notification and called 911. Marine Bureau Officers Charles Marchiselli and Michael O’Leary responded within three minutes from the time of the call.
