Residents Escape Fire on Leigh Street

Light fixture suspected as cause of blaze in house.

Occupants of a Leigh Street home escaped a fire Saturday night that apparently began in a light fixture.

The Greenlawn Fire Department said the fire broke out about 10:35 p.m., starting in the fixture outside the front entrance and spreading up the facade into the soffit and roof.

About eight residents safely escaped the house prior to the arrival of Suffolk County police and firefighters, the department said.

Greenlawn firefighters contained the fire and minimized damage to the home. Forty Greenlawn firefighters and a team from the Huntington Manor Fire Department responded. The Centerport Fire Department dispatched an engine for standby coverage at Greenlawn's quarters.

Suffolk fire-rescue coordinators also responded.

The cause of fire appears to be electrical in origin, and is under investigation by the Huntington Town Fire Marshal.
