Question of the Day: Police Targeting?

What are your thoughts regarding police who target citizens in the name of safety?

Suffolk County police Thursday announced they will begin a July 31 targeted enforcement initiative aimed at drivers who violate cell phone and texting laws. The goal of this initiative, which ends Aug. 6, is to "change driver behavior," according to a police statement.

A newly-amended state law makes the holding of any electronic devices while driving unlawful. Previously, a motorist could only be issued a traffic ticket for driving while texting if the driver also committing a separate moving violation.

Drivers will face up to a $150 fine and three points on their license if found guilty of the offense.

What do you think about police attempting to change behavior regarding cell phone use through targeted initiatives? Is targeting by police unwarranted, or is it good that police are cracking down on the dangerous use of cell phones by drivers?
