Police Investigate Near-Drowning

A boy was found unresponsive in the back yard of a Downey Drive home.

Suffolk County police on Saturday said detectives are investigating the near-drowning of a 2-year-old boy in Huntington.

Ismail Sheikh was found unresponsive by a family member in his uncle's pool on Friday evening. The uncle, Muhammed Asif Ali, pulled the boy out of the pool on 3 Downey Drive.

Sheikh and his mother, Maria Rodriguez, 26, both of 258 Half Hollow Road in Dix Hills, were visiting Asif Ali.

According to a police press release, cops were called to the residence and Second Precinct Patrol Sergeant Brendan Forte arrived and administered CPR on Sheikh. Sgt. Forte brought the child into the patrol car of Second Precinct Police Officers John Fenelius and Scott Guido.

The officers then transported the child to Huntington Hospital, where he was treated and later transported to Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park.

Sheikh is listed in critical condition.
