Police: Coram Man Killed in Crash on the LIE

A Coram man is dead and his stepson is in the hospital following a single-car crash on the Long Island Expressway in Melville Monday evening, police said. 

According to police, Rafael Ortiz, 57, was driving a 2001 Toyota Camry west on the LIE when the vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a pole east of Exit 50 in Melville around 7:25 p.m. 

Ortiz’s stepfather, Dominic Bottiglieri, 83, was killed in the crash, police said. Ortiz, also of Coram, was transported by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing.
