Police: Brooklyn Man Drove Drunk With 3 Kids in Car on Sagtikos

Jovany Vargas is arrested Saturday night, police say.

A Brooklyn man was arrested Saturday night after police say he was drunk while driving on the Sagtikos Parkway with three children in his car.

According to State Police, troopers stopped a black Mercury headed southbound on the Sagtikos Parkway near the LIE at 10:18 p.m. for changing lanes unsafely and driving onto the shoulder.

While interviewing the driver, Jovany Vargas, 33, a trooper detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage, police said.

Vargas failed sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested for DWI, police said. There were three children–ages 9, 7 and 2–in the car at the time, police said.

Vargas was charged with aggravated DWI with child under 16 in vehicle–a felony under Leandra's Law and traffic violations.  Vargas was arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday and is currently free on $15,000 bond.
