Multi-Department Cooperation on the Water

One year after sinking in Oyster Bay, police and fire departments left nothing to chance on July 4.

One year after the famed Dolan fireworks show ended with three dead in a capsized boat at the bottom of Oyster Bay, water safety was foremost in everyone’s mind as July 4 rolled around.

The traditional Oyster Bay fireworks were canceled, meaning the focus turned to Asharoken’s famed Independence Day fireworks on the Long Island Sound.

Police and fire departments throughout the Town of Huntington mobilized to help patrol the waterways from Huntington and Northport harbors, Northport Bay and the Sound. The Town imposed a 5 mph speed limit.

And the presence of patrol boats was unmistakable.

One of the operations saw the Centerport Fire Department assist the Asharoken Police Department by providing an EMT to accompany the police boat.
