Leak Damages Business at Northport Plaza

Bathroom destroyed by falling tiles at Thirty-Minute Photo Tuesday, officials deem building safe.

A Northport merchant kept away from his business by Friday’s blizzard arrived Tuesday to find the ceiling collapsed in a rear room.

Raja Mohammad, who owns Thirty-Minute Photo at 826 Fort Salonga Road, said he discovered the bathroom to his shop had been destroyed – sometime in the last 72 hours – and called 911.

Suffolk County Police and East Northport Fire Department crews responded to the scene before noon and deemed the plaza, which houses Ace Hardware, Starbucks and Venus Greek Restaurant, safe.

Mohammad, who has been a tenant for 11 years, said he informed the building’s owner.

Mohammad lives in Stony Brook. He said the snowfall and bad roads kept him from making the trek to Northport until Tuesday.

But once he arrived, he panicked because electrical wires were also hanging from the ceiling as water kept pouring down from the roof. See photos.

Snowfall has played havoc with the region, from cars stuck and abandoned on 25A Friday to three locals dropping dead while shoveling snow.

Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove remained closed Tuesday morning after roof leaks in several stores forced the mall to shut down. The roof to AMF Smithtown Lanes collapsed Saturday.

East Northport Fire Department, not Not Northport Fire Department.

Fixed. Thanks.

East Northport Merchant -- not Northport. The village starts on the North side of Fort Salonga Road. Otherwise, nice article; good luck to him.

Let's not be that way. The new president of the Northport Chamber of Commerce is from the South side of Fort Salonga Road.
