Huntington Woman Arrested for Robbing Cab Drivers

The suspect slashed one driver as his car approached Lafayette Street and Brooklyn Avenue.

Suffolk County police on Monday arrested a 26-year-old Huntington woman who allegedly robbed a taxi cab driver early this morning.

According to the police, an Orange and White Taxi company driver picked up a fare on Lantern Street in Huntington at approximately 12:05 a.m. in response to a call made by the suspect, Amy Kowalewski. The suspect slashed the driver, James Nugent, 60, in the neck and hands with a kitchen knife as the cab approached Lafayette Street and Brooklyn Avenue. Kowalewski fled the scene after stealing cash from the driver.

Kowalewski was arrested about 90 minutes later.

Nugent was transported and admitted to Northport Veterans Administration Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.

Second Squad detectives, who were investigating a similar taxi cab robbery that occurred in Huntington on Sunday, charged Kowalewski with two counts of Robbery 1st Degree.

Kowalewski, of 5 Delamere St. in Huntington, will be arraigned at First District Court at Central Islip on Tuesday.
