Driver Hurt After Hitting Ice on Route 110

Town says waste dumped illegally into manhole, causing overflow.

A driver was injured Monday morning when he hit a patch of ice on Route 110 near the Northridge Street intersection, Suffolk County police said.

The ice was the result of water from a blockage in a sewer line, police said. Town spokesman A. J. Carter said the town's preliminary investigation indicated that "a   scavenger waste truck illegally opened a manhole and dumped into it," causing the overflow.
The southbound car left the roadway shortly after 8 a.m. and hit a pole in the LIRR parking lot.

The driver's injuries were not life-threatening, police said. He was taken to Huntington Hospital for treatment.

Work crews and Suffolk County police officers were on the scene. Ice could be seen on the entrance to the parking lot and at the foot of Northridge Street, which was blocked off to traffic.

No further details were immediately available.
