Northport

A 13-year-old  student was accosted on the way to her bus stop last week, according to .

Three students were reportedly walking to their stop around 6:50 a.m. when they encountered a man making threatening physical and verbal gestures. Police say the man approached a girl from behind and grabbed her. She then punched the man, causing him to let her go, and ran to her bus stop with the other children.

Police describe the man as having a tan complexion, 20 to 30 years old, and five feet seven inches tall to six feet tall. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, and a skull cap at the time of the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the Second Precinct Crime Section at 631-854-8268 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

Kings Park

Of the 161 individuals arrested in a recent heroin bust, 41 were from Smithtown with Kings Park residents making up more than half of that number; the majority of them being 21 years of age or younger according the the Queens District Attorney's office.

The bust, dubbed "Operation Heroin Highway" played out over the course of a year, originating in Queens and expanding into Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The results of the operation were announced last week by the Queens District Attorney's office. In all, officers seized more than 8,000 glassine envelopes of heroin, more than five kilograms of heroin, 2.7 kilograms of cocaine and five pistols, a shotgun and an assault rifle. 

Three Commack residents were among  the 41 arrested.

Babylon Village 

Suffolk First Precinct detectives are investigating a shooting outside of Maggie’s Bar in West Babylon early Sunday morning in which a male was shot twice in the left calf.

Police say the incident, which took place in front of 995 Straight Path, occurred at 3:13 a.m. and was reported by a 911 caller. Police say the victim was standing at the entrance to the bar’s parking lot when the shooting occurred. He drove himself to Good Samaritan Hospital and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Jericho
A New Cassel man is accused of stealing items from the Jericho Home Depot and threatening a security guard with a knife, Nassau County Police said.

Alan M. Miles, 46 of New Cassel, exited Home Depot without paying while attempting to conceal items in his clothing, according to police reports. When security officers attempted to stop Miles, said police, he threatened them with a kitchen knife and fled on foot. Police reported that Miles was seen taking a bicycle on Briarcliffe Road in Westbury where a responding officer injured her wrist attempting to stop him.

Miles was finally apprehended on Audrey Road in Westbury by assisting officers and the stolen items were returned to Home Depot, said police.

No other injuries were reported.

Miles was charged with third degree robbery, second degree assault, second degree menacing, petit larceny and fourth degree possession of a dangerous weapon. He was arraigned on Jan. 17 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Massapequa

Two Amityville men were arrested on charges of trying to steal copper piping inside a vacant Massapequa home last week, police said.

Carl Greggs, 29, and Christopher Terrell, 21, were busted after somebody made a 911 call saying they saw two suspicious men walking around the property on Fair Court at about 10 a.m. The officers spotted the men and ordered them to exit the house, where they were arrested.

Greggs and Terrell were both charged with burglary, while Terrell was also charged with possession of burglary tools. 

Plainview

A Massapequa Park man broke into a vacant building in Plainview and was arrested after tripping an alarm, police said.

James A. Vitale, 48, allegedly entered the building at 1425 Old Country Road and tried to remove copper wiring at about 2:50 p.m. on Tuesday.

The burglar thought the electricty had been turned off,  but the alarm went off and cops said they caught him red-handed in the basement.

Vitale was charged with burglary and possesion of burglary tools.
