Crime Nearby: Homeless Man Strangled

Lake Ronkonkoma

A homeless man was arrested and charged with strangling another homeless man on Saturday outside of a fast food restaurant in Lake Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County Police said. According to police, Kevin Conway, 33, got into an altercation with Keith Leone in the parking lot of Checkers Restaurant at 258 Portion Road at around 1:30 a.m. Law enforcement authorities said Leone was left at the scene unconscious and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition. Leone, 39, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead Oct. 23.

Long Beach

A Long Beach woman was arrested and charged with seven counts of acting in a manor injurious to a child less than 17 years old and seven counts of unlawfully dealing with a child, an alcohol-related charge on Oct. 15. According to Long Beach police, Kimberly Ossandon, 38, knowingly purchased and served for consumption a bottle of cotton candy-flavored Pinnacle vodka, an alcoholic beverage, to seven 14-year-old children on Sept. 16. One teenage girl became highly intoxicated, which necessitated that the she receive emergency medical treatment by the Long Beach Fire Department, who transported her to Long Beach Medical Center, where she was treated in the emergency room, according to Sgt. Eric Cregeen, a police spokesman.

The treasurer of a Bethpage church stole $35,000 from the congregation's coffers, using the money for gas, fast food and at least one mortgage payment, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said Friday. Derrick Campbell, 43, of West Babylon, was arrested Friday by D.A. investigators and charged with felony counts of grand larceny and criminal possession of a forged instrument. He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted, Rice said.

Hempstead

Crime Stoppers and the Nassau County Police Department’s Arson Bomb Squad are seeking the public’s help in locating two men in connection with an arson which occurred in Hempstead. On Monday, Sept. 10, the men poured an accelerant on the victim’s door mat and ignited it. Crime Stoppers is asking anyone who knows the location of the subject(s) or with any information about this crime to call our toll free hotline:  1-800-244-TIPS (8477).

Southampton

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Southampton Village Police are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the man who stole a $3,400 piece of jewelry from a store in Southampton. While distracting an employee of Rose Jewelers,  the man reached into a display case and removed a $3,400 American flag pin made of rubies, diamonds and sapphires on Oct. 11. The man, who is described as Hispanic, approximately 5 feet, 11 inches tall, between 30 and 35 years old with short black hair and a stocky build, fled on foot. Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward of up to $5,000.00 for information that leads to an arrest.

Massapequa

Four teens from Massapequa have been charged with robbery after they took oxycodone from a 20-year-old man in Hicksville, police said. Taylor Bocchiaro, 17, Joseph Dilena, 19,  Ryan Heselton, 18, and Edward Kaercher, 17, drove to a 7-Eleven parking lot on South Broadway "with the intention of purchasing an undisclosed amount of oxycodone pills" according to police. They picked up the victim in a car driven by Dilena at about 5:55 p.m. The group drove to the parking lot a Sleepy's on South Oyster Bay Road. When they got there, they allegedly pushed the victim out of the car, punched him and took the oxycodone pills from his pocket.  They got back in the car and headed south on South Oyster Bay Road.

A Massapequa teen who was arrested last month for a series of car break-ins, has been charged with a burglary that took place last week, police said. Keith Barkan, 18 allegedly entered  a home on Oct. 18 and took jewelery. He then pawned the jewelry at two local shops, according to police who said that officers going over pawn records discovered it was stolen property. Police said they also discovered that Barkan had sold iPod to a local Gamestop that had been stolen in a car break-in on St. Mark's place in July. On Sept. 8 Barkan was charged in connection with five other car break-ins after he allegedly used a used a stolen credit card at a Merrick Road 7-Eleven.

  • Shaquanna Patterson, 29, of Far Rockaway, was arrested on Oct. 19 for shoplifting at Old Navy in Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream.
  • James J. Hankerson, 40, of Manhattan, was arrested on Oct. 19 for shoplifting at the Walmart on Green Acres Road in Valley Stream.
  • Jamel J. Talbert, 35, of Springfield Gardens, was arrested on Oct. 16 for shoplifting at the Walmart on Green Acres Road in Valley Stream.
  • Tquanna S. Brissett, 24, of Jamaica, was arrested on Oct. 20 for shoplifting at the Sears at Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream.
  • Rashawn J. Davis, 23, of Hollis, was arrested on Oct. 22 for shoplifting at the Walmart on Green Acres Road in Valley Stream.
  • Ruthy Edouard, 36, of Elmont, was arrested on Oct. 22 for shoplifting at the Walmart on Green Acres Road in Valley Stream..
  • Rachel O. Pompeii, 34, of Far Rockaway, was arrested on Oct. 22 for shoplifting at the Walmart on Green Acres Road in Valley Stream.
