County: Expect Enhanced Patrols

Police to be out in force in public safety effort during holiday season.

Suffolk County drivers can expect to see enhanced police patrols for the holiday season.

In an effort to remove drunk and aggressive drivers while keeping shoppers safe throughout the coming weeks, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer today announced the department’s plans for stepped up patrols in several areas.

Beginning Wednesday and continuing through New Year’s Day, police will increase patrols targeting drivers who are intoxicated or impaired, according to a statement from Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer.

"Emphasis will be placed on enforcing laws pertaining to safety belt use, distracted driving and cell phone usage while driving and officers will exercise zero tolerance for these violations," according to the release. "The department will also focus on high visibility patrols and enforcement in downtown bar areas and other licensed premises that attract large crowds."

Particular attention will be focused on malls and shopping centers on Black Friday and public events to ensure safe conditions. Enhanced foot, bicycle and vehicle patrols are planned as well.

“The enhanced patrols are aimed at keeping our residents safe during the holiday season,” said Levy.
