Cops: East Northport Man Arrested for Fleeing Crash That Seriously Injured Woman

An East Northport man was arrested Wednesday for leaving the scene of a car crash that left a woman seriously injured last year, authorities said.

Suffolk County Police say Alvaro Alfaro was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer heading south on Park Avenue in Greenlawn on Oct. 13 when his car struck a 1998 Dodge Neon at the intersection with Lantern Street at about 12:30 a.m.

The driver of the Neon, Sulma Rivas, of Brentwood, was seriously injured and her passenger, Macia Castro, of Central Islip, suffered minor injuries, according to police.

Alfaro fled on foot, leaving a puppy in his vehicle, police say. The puppy, which was not injured, was turned over to the Town of Huntington Animal Shelter.

Alfaro, 26, surrendered to the Second Squad on Wednesday. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and circumventing an interlock device.
