Cop Injured in Landscaping Truck Hit and Run

Police seek truck that ran over officer in Huntington Sunday.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Second Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the person and/or vehicles that were involved in an incident that seriously injured a police officer in Huntington on Nov. 4 at approximately 6:20 p.m.

Second Precinct Police Officer Tim Tonkin had stopped on the east side of
Greenlawn Road, near the intersection of Hampton Court, and exited his vehicle to check for a flat tire when the officer observed several white utility or tree trimming trucks approaching him.

One of the trucks or material in back of one of the trucks struck the officer in the head and caused him to fall. A truck then ran over his right arm and shoulder. The trucks did not stop and continued to travel north on Greenlawn Road. The trucks are believed to be white with flashing yellow lights and were carrying tree branches and debris.

Detectives are looking to interview the driver of a white Mercedes SUV that was
reportedly in the area at the time of the incident. They also want to speak with area residents who may have hired private landscapers on Sunday, November 4, with trucks matching the description above.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have information about the incident,
witnessed the crash when it occurred, or has information on the vehicles involved to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential. Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
