Car Sought in New York Avenue Hit-and-Run

Police say driver fled after running down bicyclist, who was seriously injured.

released a photo Tuesday morning of an SUV they believe struck and seriously injured a bicyclist on New York Avenue.

The after the accident, which occurred about 4:40 a.m. on Aug. 25.

Police identified the seriously injured bicyclist as Jose Colato, 47. He was riding his bicycle north on New York Ave., approximately 50 feet north of Pulaski Road, when he was struck by the SUV, also traveling north on New York Ave.

The vehicle is described as a 1996-2001 white 2-door Jeep Cherokee. After the crash, the vehicle fled north on New York Avenue and then went east on Broadway in Huntington Station, police said. Detectives believe that the passenger side headlight and side-view mirror were damaged in the crash.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-220-TIPS.  All calls will be kept confidential.
