Crash Photos Added: Victim Airlifted From Walt Whitman High School

Suffolk County police met fire and EMS personnel at the school Thursday afternoon.

Update, May 29, 6:22 p.m: Car crash photos added. Also, the crash took place at 864 W. Jericho Turnpike.

Update, May 28, 4 p.m.: Suffolk police arrested a Hicksville man for driving while his ability was impaired by drugs following a motor vehicle crash Thursday afternoon that sent three people to the hospital.

George Filippone Jr., 39, was driving a 2006 Subaru eastbound on Jericho Turnpike when he crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a 2008 Ford van head-on at 1 p.m. in front of 864 Jericho Turnpike.

The driver of the van, Bruce Lesser, 53, of Franklin Square, and Filippone Jr., were transported to Huntington Hospital with minor injuries.

Carolyn Greenberg, 45, of Roslyn Heights, the only passenger in Filippone's car, was transported via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center where she was admitted with several broken ribs and a broken sternum. 

Second Squad detectives charged Filippone Jr. with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. He will be arraigned today at First District Court in Central Islip.

Original article: The Huntington Community First Aid Squad and the Huntington Manor Fire Department both responded to a motor vehicle accident at West Jericho Turnpike and Oakwood Road in Huntington Thursday at 1:10 p.m.

The driver of the car was trapped inside and the roof had to be removed to extricate. Emergency personnel called for a helicopter to transport the victim to Stony Brook Hospital.

The first aid squad transported the victim to Walt Whitman High School to meet the Suffolk County Police Department helicopter that landed on the school's football field.

A police spokesperson declined to comment but said the department hopes to have more information to share soon.
