Cabbie Shooting: Charge the Cops?

2011 shooting in Huntington Station triggers questions.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said Thursday that the county police department would  investigate and discipline an officer who shot an unarmed cabbie after an off-duty dispute in 2011.

Newsday reported this week that Nassau County officer Anthony DiLeonardo had been drinking when he got into the dispute and fired into the cab driven by Thomas Moroughan. The cabbie was shot five times but survived. Another Nassau officer, officer Edward Bienz, was also involved in the dispute.

While an internal Nassau police report recommended departmental charges against both officers, neither Nassau nor Suffolk police brought criminal charges, though the shooting occurred on Oakwood Road in Huntington Station.

The cabbie was initially arrested at Huntington Hospital where he was being treated for his wounds but the charges were later dropped.

What do you think? Should the Suffolk police investigate further? Should the two Nassau officers, who remain on duty, face further discipline?
