Farmingdale School Board: Create Budget Within Cap

The Board of Education has asked administrators to prepare a budget that falls within the , a different directive , Superintendent John Lorentz said at the January school board meeting.

He explained that earlier this year the board had asked the administration to prepare two budgets for the community - one that pierces that the tax cap and maintains all programs and would require 60 percent of the voters to approve it and one that would live within the cap but may have some impact on programs.

Six Burglaries in Less Than 2 Weeks

Suffolk County police have confirmed that six Commack homes have been burglarized since New Year's Eve. 

The slew of home invasions has many area residents speaking out about what they are calling a rash of recent burglaries in the area. Three of the reported burglaries occurred on Jan. 6, and two more on Jan. 10, according to police.

Gunman Confronts Elderly Plainview Couple

An elderly Plainview resident returning home from shopping was accosted by a man with a gun who ordered the victim into his home and proceeded to ransack the residence.

The attacker, who displayed a dark handgun, took money, credit cards, a cell phone and jewelry from the man and his wife, who was home at the time, Nassau County Police said Thursday. The attack took place about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Supporters Rally Against Closing of School

Parents and supporters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help school in Lindenhurst are rallying Sunday to protest the plan to close the 99-year-old school. The school is on the list of six Catholic schools that the plans to this June.
