2 Injured in West Hills Crash

Head-on collision on Round Swamp Road sends 2 to hospital.

Two people were injured in a head-on crash on Round Swamp Road Friday afternoon.

A Toyota and  a Nissan sedan traveling in opposite directions on Round Swamp Road in West Hills near Westvale Lane collided head on, sending both drivers to Huntington Hospital with very serious injuries.

After colliding the Toyota veered off the  road and slammed into a utility pole, causing the transformer to break open and leak on top of the vehicle.

The Huntington Manor Fire Department and Huntington Community First Aid Squad responded to the scene.

Round Swamp Road is one of the worst roads to travel. Accidents happen every week. Something needs to be done now.

I agree. How many people need to get hurt or killed before the Town of Huntington wakes up. They narrowed the lanes and added white stripes but nothing has worked to date. They need to add a traffic light between the NSP and Jericho and/or put in speed bumps every 50 yards or so.

Maybe everybody could slow down some. Just a thought...

The new white stripes and dozens of signs do a good job in warning about turns. Blame crashes on the poor and aggressive driving !
Joe L October 20, 2012 at 02:41 pm
I agree, those stripes are very useful for recognizing turns at night. Blame the drivers who are too aggressive in the rain! Most people don't understand that light rain is worse to drive in than heavy, in terms of oils on the road.

The hash marks on the road are very useful, especially at night. I traveled that road last night around 7:30 P.M. and the road was still closed. Everyone just needs to slow down!!!!

It makes sense for drivers to slow down but they are not doing that. in fact, drivers but young and old are become even more aggressive. Something else needs to be done. Maybe they can also put in a permanent speed trap of some sort with a camera like I have seen in other states.

They really need to do something. There are at least 10 accidents a year on that same exact turn.

The road is fine, it is the drivers that something needs to be done about. If you are driving at a normal rate of speed you won't have a problem. I live and drive on it everyday, never had an accident. The town can not prevent stupid.
BK13 October 21, 2012 at 04:07 pm
Disagree strongly. You don't have an issue there because you know the area and are wary there. If you are heading south and take that turn at just a little over the limit it can easily put you over the line. If you don't know the area well it can jump up and bite you. If you have that many accidents IN THE SAME SPOT it's an engineering issue.

The problem is the Round Swamp Road was never as crowded as it is now. Traffic is being rerouted to this road to ease the traffic from the LIE. Thats why they installed the nice big green signs. They need to ban commercial vehicles from turning left from the LIE down the road and from Jericho turnoike. That might reduce at least 40% of the vehicles on the road.
BK13 October 22, 2012 at 01:31 pm
Crowded or not, most of the accidents are from cars headed southbound who make that turn wide and wind up in oncoming traffic. It has nothing to do with the traffic on that road, that's a whole different ugly issue. The problem is that one 'death turn' It's almost always the same spot.

I am the husband of the woman who was driving the Toyota. The road needs a patrol car stationed there all the time, or something to help, because my wife was in her lane driving UNDER the speed limit when she "saw a car swerving in front of me, and there was nothing I could do." She suffered a broken neck and had to undergo major surgery because someone else was driving recklessly. I'm truly disgusted with how so many people are in such a rush.
Gail October 23, 2012 at 01:49 pm
John, I hope your wife is ok.
BK13 October 23, 2012 at 02:25 pm
Ditto. Prayers sent for a healthy recovery.

John. I hope your wife recovers 100%. As far as the rest of you, we cannot assume drivers will slow down or drive careful because we accept them as being stupid like some people have. What we can is put things in place to make them think twice or for drivers not familiar with the road. Like I said before, they need to add speed bumps, another traffic light, cameras whatever. Round Swamp Road averages about two accidents per month and it is only getting worse because people rush off or onto the highways every day. We all need to write to the town of huntington and let them know we need to take drastic measures. We also need to attend town meetings and express our concerns.

Your wife is in the hospital.....and your blogging on line? Seriously??
Brian October 29, 2012 at 01:11 pm
So I assume you were the careless driver?
BK13 October 29, 2012 at 05:00 pm
dee I am sure someone linked him here...and there's a lot of sitting around time at the hospital...and...of course...thanks for being so judgemental...

Whether or not there are safety issues on RSR, the traffic lights they installed accomplished nothing but to create more congestion and waste gas. Perhaps the timing of the lights needs to be adjusted - I frequently come to the light when it is red and there is no one exiting the side road and then when the light turns green, the other light just 50 yards away turns red. The idea is to slow down traffic, not bring it to a complete stop and cause traffic backups.

Usually cats stay within a few houses of home Sometimes they just hunker down under a neighbor'sRead More shed or deck. He is more likely to come to you at night when there aren't as many lawn mower sounds. Walk around with a can of the stinkiest cat food that you can find. Call to him, and listen for a response. He may answer you with soft meows. Make a trail of stinky cat food to your door and leave the can at the door overnight. Hang up signs with a photo in the neighborhood. Go door to door and tell neighbors to call you if they see him. Kids playing, and dog walkers might spot him. Once you have an idea, of where he is, you can use a have a heart trap to catch him, if he won't come to you. Some cats get so scared when they get out, that they don't recognize their humans. We have had cats disappear for months, before trapping them.

Tuesday about 7am at the intersection of Jericho and 110-I think it was 3 cars with an overturnedRead More silver SUV. Saw it right after it happened-about 7 people were trying to push the SUV upright
Pam Robinson (Editor) June 13, 2013 at 05:13 pm
We've checked with authorities on this and they say there were no major injuries. While we try toRead More get to every serious accident, we're not going to be able to cover everything that happens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Well it looked bad-glad that the drivers are ok.
