Patch Asks: Where Were You on Sept. 11, 2001?

Do you remember where you were or what you were doing when you found out about the attacks?

If you were old enough to understand the horror of the terrorist attacks on our country on Sept. 11, 2001, then you probably remember where you were when you heard the shocking news.

I was a sophomore at Bayport-Blue Point High School in 2001. I should've been in gym class, but due to an ankle injury, I was stuck in the school library doing a report on sports. I heard the woman behind the library desk gasp, and I followed her gaze to the television to see a airplane crash into a tower. To be honest, I couldn't quite make sense of what I was seeing, but I knew it was horrible. The woman turned the volume up on the TV. Those of us in the library watched the news in awed silence until the class bell rang, then I entered the halls of the high school filled with students announcing the tragedy. That memory has stuck with me throughout the years, unmarred by time.

Feel free to share how you remember the events of that day in the comments.

I was working at 90 John Street, about three or four blocks from the World Trade Center. When the 2nd plane hit we heard a big boom with a loud rumble and our building shook. I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge to Atlantic Avenue to the Long Island Railroad to get home that day. When I got off the train in Huntington I took a deep breath and said to myself . . . "Wow . . . I survived my generation's Pearl Harbor"!!

I had a meeting at 10:00am at WTC2. From the LIRR, we could see that there was smoke coming from the first tower. We speculated that it was an accident involving a small plane or helicopter. When we reached Penn Station, people went about their normal business, including people who were headed for Wall Street. I called my wife and she was hysterical since she was watching the Today Show and knew what really happened. She told me to get on any train leaving Penn for LI and that she would pick me up. I wound up going to Babylon and taking the Suffolk .County Transit Bus to Bayport. All of my colleagues on the the 84th floor managed to escape safely except for two guys who had gone to the bathroom. Such a twist of fate!
