HUNTINGTON ROADS

Iam an avid jogger on the streets in Huntington. Each time I go out for a jog this winter I take my life in my hands. The roads are so poorly maintained from this winter weather that you would think they never so snow before. Its winter in the Northeast, it snows, it gets icy their is nothing new about that. The technology exists to better prepare, maintain, construct and removal of snow and ice from our roads. The town is stating that they have already used a large part of their salt and sand budget. Have you ever considered alternative measures, how about the equipment used to put the sand and salt on our streets. I stand outside my home as I watch the sand truck drive past me dropping a ton of sand on the roads. Then a plow will drive past and push it to the side, c'mon what a waste is that. Do the trucks need to drop so much on these little side roads, how about roads that are over 30 mph only? The town should take a close look at how other parts of the country handle their roads, because they are not complaining as much as I see in every social blog, news report, or facebook. I only mentioned the roads so far, but as a jogger I spend much of my time on the shoulders, if your readers think the roads are bad try on a pair of running shoes and go for a jog. Unbelievable road conditions is what you are going to encounter. Underneath all the ice, sand, and potholes is garbage. When did the town stop picking up garbage? broken beer bottles, plastic, paper and landscape debris are destroying our shoulders so that you cant even walk on the shoulder and than you find yourself in the middle of the road, good grief, I don't need to mention the danger in that, its a fact the roads of long island are the most dangerous in the country, no wonder why. The non joggers tell me to stop complaining and jog on the side walk. Well they have never spent a day in my sneakers, have you ever tried to walk on the sidewalks anywhere in Huntington, besides Huntington village, which for some strange reason are cleaned everyday in the wee hours of the morning, why other towns , villages or neighborhoods don't get this little perk is for another story all together. I thought deep down in some ordinance, rule, or law the sidewalks are to be safe, clear and walkable. It is the responsibility of the owner of that property to maintain, or the the town will do it for them. Wow did I just create a job market to enforce, maintain and beautify our town... hmmm. I will be honest with you now, I no longer live in Huntington for these reasons, where has the pride in ones town gone? I tell you the answer, they are moving off the island. Lets clean up our infrastructures and than maybe someday Long Island even Huntington can be a vacation destination.
